Activities and Visits in the Duras Area

The Duras area in south-west France really does offer something for everyone. Our location is perfect for those searching for an activity holiday but is equally ideal for those wanting to relax by the pool or simply explore all the region has to offer.

We're ideally located between Bergerac, Duras and Bordeaux - an easy drive to the coast, the region's capital, the vineyards of Saint Emilion and the sights and history of the Dordogne.

Cycling

Cycling is a wonderful way to explore this region of France. You can discover the rolling countryside, vineyards and orchards, traditional crops, woods, pigoeneries and medieval bridges at your leisure.

For the serious cyclists, cycle routes can be downloaded off the Duras Tourist Board official site ranging 59 – 102 kms with varying degrees of ease and difficulty.

Fishing

There are eight different fishing lakes in the area offering a great variety of fishing.

But - all guest staying with us have access to our own private fishing lake stocked with Carp, Tench and Perch.

Walking

Walking is a national pastime for the French. This area is very popular and dotted with paths and routes for all levels. We will happily advise you on a route to suit you.

Golf

Golf is popular and we have 6 golf courses in the area, one of the most popular being the 27 hole course at Chateaux Des Vigiers.

Canoes and Kayaks

There is a Kayak club at Allemans-du-Dropt. In summer, the club offers canoe rentals and outings on the Dropt River.

For the more adventurous, there are also canoe opportunities on the mighty Dordogne River.

Horse Riding

There are several riding stables in the area, and wonderful off road tracks and woodland for safe hacking with no need to ride on the roads.

Duras

Duras is a charming medieval town with Chateau Duras as its focal point.

There are several cafes, bars, restaurants, Boulangerie and other general shops along with a Post Office, Doctors, Vets and everything you could want for your holiday in France; there is also a weekly market on a Monday.

Vineyards and Wine

Duras is surrounded by vines and vineyards which run from Duras up through Saint Emilion to the Medoc and Bourdeaux.

There are a host of famous Chateau that open their doors for wine tasting. Saint Emilion offers a tour of its vineyards via a tourist train and the famous Monbazillac chateau also is open for visits.

Duras celebrates its wine festival in April each year - the perfect time for a spring break!

Atlantic Coast

The Bay of Arcachon is 1500 hectares fed both by the ocean and a large number of waterways, producing an inland sea with the colours of a lagoon. It is bordered on one side by a blond crown of fine sand culminating the Dune du Pila - europes largest sand dune! From its summit you can also see the beautiful Landes forest.
The beautiful Atlantic coast is jut under two hours from our gites, so perfect for a day trip to the seaside!

Chateaux and History

The Chateaux of Duras was built in 1137 by Viscount Bezaume, Duras is one of the first "Castel-Naou" of Aquitaine. The current castle was built in 1308 by Bertrand de Goth. Fortress dedicated to the English during the 100 Years War, it was the scene of many tumults under the yoke of Durfort family.

In the basement of the castle of Duras, an ethnological museum reflects the rural life in the duraquois through the centuries and has a collection of archaeological finds.

We are just over the border from the Dordogne, famed for it's 1001 chateau.

Bordeaux and Shopping

Bordeaux is a flat city, built on the banks of the Garonne River. Not only is Bordeaux renowned for being the wine capital of France, it also boasts the longest high street in Europe.

It also boast amazing markets and the antique market along the banks of the River Garonne on a Sunday morning are not to be missed.

Bordeaux has a fantastic tram system and easy park-and-ride parking on it's outskirts.

This is rural SW France and the local markets are full of fresh, seasonal local produce. Local to our gites you'll find :

● Monday Duras
● Friday Seyches
● Saturday Sainte Foy Le Grande
● From July to September Duras hosts a Night Markets with opportunities to shop, eat and dance!
● Soumensa Farmers Market Country - Sunday afternoon July thru to September
● Lévignac de Guyenne - night market in July and August

There are other large markets at Libourne and Bergerac - please ask for details.
